J.P. Morgan sat on the D&H Canal Company board and used his position to complete his monopolization of the coal industry in America. John Roebling supplied his innovative wire rope to the D&H Gravity Railroad in 1844 and went on to build four magnificent suspension aqueducts for the Canal that same decade. In addition, his company later won a victory over the monopolists (often called at the time “Morganizers”) of the Gilded Age, a victory which was very rare, indeed.
These fascinating and often hilarious stories will be told by Lynne Calamia, the Executive Director of the Roebling Museum in Roebling, New Jersey, and by Philip Palmer, Curator and Department Head, Literary and Historical Manuscripts, at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York City.
Working from a treasure trove of materials from the Morgan Library supplied by Mr. Palmer, the gala will include a dinner expertly designed by Kevin Zraly to feature Morgan’s fabulous culinary and wine tastes. Musicians Laurel Massé and Vinnie Martucci will perform Gilded Era songs of protest and of romance.
Proceeds benefit the D&H Canal Historical Society’s activities including the Museum of the history of the Canal, speakers and performing arts programs, the Visitor Center, and the renovation of the Toll Collector/Telegraph Building.
A lovely door prize has been offered that will include a tour for four of the Roebling Museum and of the company town of Roebling, New Jersey, by Lynne Calamia, Executive Director of the Roebling Museum. The tour will be followed by lunch at the elegant Nassau Club in Princeton (of which 2 Presidents of the United States were members) hosted by Bill Roebling.

Lynne Calamia is a leader in the field of Public History, with more than a decade of broad, hands-on experience at museums, historic sites, and archives. At the core of her work is the drive to turn historical stories into engaging experiences that make history accessible and relevant for people today.
Lynne holds a PhD (2015) in American Studies from Penn State University and her academic research on historic preservation and labor history prepared her for her role at Roebling Museum, a hidden-gem industrial history site in New Jersey. Since joining the staff, Lynne has dedicated herself to preserving and sharing the stories of the former company town that housed workers who built iconic suspension bridges in the US such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge, and George Washington Bridge. Under her leadership, the museum created dynamic programs, exhibits, and tours that celebrate the stories of everyday people who lived and worked in Roebling. Most notably, she has built new relationships with descendant families to expand and diversify the museum’s collection, partnered with the Smithsonian on an exhibit about labor in the United States, and acquired a historic immigrant-worker’s house across the street from the museum to turn into an immersive experience for visitors.
