As a widow, Ann DeWitt Bevier managed her family’s agricultural interests, supervised a staff of both slave and free labor, and raised eight children. The stone house she built on Route 209 still survives, as does a ledger she maintained from 1802-1813. This rich primary source provides perspective on the life of a rural agriculturalist in the Rondout Valley in the period just before the D&H Canal was to transform the region.
